June 12, 1943 - September 15, 2021

A service to commemorate Janis’s life will be held on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at Centerpoint Church, 2345 N. 10th St., Kalamazoo.  A livestream of the service will be at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4ZXWH2YZXM  A memorial meal will follow the service.  Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be directed to either the Latvian Ev. Lutheran United Church of Kalamazoo or the Kalamazoo Latvian Association.  Both at 122 Cherry Hill Drive, Kalamazoo, MI, 49006.

Dear family, I am sending you my deepest sympathy. Even with a long illness, such a loss is so hard to grasp. Janis' smile and his "can do" attitude will continue to be felt by the many people whose lives he touched. May you also find comfort and healing in this larger family, knowing others share in your grief and are sending love. To the Kukainis family, my deepest condolences. Surely his loss will be felt by many. There can be no greater testament to his life than his children. It was an honor to have known him.

To Janis's children and grandchildren I send my condolences your father was a very honorable man. I have many fond memories of him when he helped my parents out in Trenton and as I was going through school in Cincinnati. I enjoyed going to visit him in Tennessee. His marriage to Aija, I think in some ways blessed his life and he became a outstanding spokesperson for Latvia. May he rest in peace.
