With her loving husband at her side, at the age of 60, Laurie Ann VanderBerg passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Laurie was born in Moline, IL, on April 30, 1964, the daughter of the late James and Mary (Herzenach) Bauer. Kind, selfless and loving; all words that describe Laurie. She had a passion for helping others and no matter where she was, found ways to be involved and make a difference. A career and goal minded woman, Laurie worked tirelessly in both the legal field and funeral industry. Always professional in her presentation, she was terrific at public relations, loved networking and getting to know people. Her enjoyment of conversation allowed her to put others at ease and make friends wherever she went. Laurie believed that education and experience were the keys to success. She was a Level II State Certified Advance Planner, had a wealth of knowledge pertaining to elder law and finance; held many certificates, was a member of several associations, committees, councils and volunteer programs, all aimed at helping others. She was a proud WMU Bronco who received her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences in 1986. Never one to back down from a challenge, or shy away from hard work, she would always take the extra step whenever needed. Long hours at her desk or working overtime on a project seemed routine for Laurie. She often put the needs of those she worked with and for ahead of her own. Much can be said about her professional career, but it was her role as a wife and mother that Laurie was most proud of! On September 23, 1989, she married John VanderBerg. Together they brought into the world their son, James. John and James captured Laurie’s heart and were at the center of all that she held dear. Laurie was a loving, supportive and dedicated wife and mother. When something was needed for her family, Laurie would do all she could to provide it. Though she dedicated many hours working for local firms and businesses, she also made the time to be present at her son’s important events. To say Laurie was a proud mother is an understatement! Laurie also had a strong faith in the Lord; a belief she shared openly with others and relied on throughout her life. Her friendly greeting will be missed at church on Sunday mornings. She had many other joys in life. She loved spending time at the family home in De Tour Village. She never missed an opportunity to catch sunsets and spend time with friends on a summer night. Her home was always open and one more guest would always be welcomed in. She also spent countless hours taking pictures of local nature, and beachcombing for unusual rocks and treasures to surround her happy place in De Tour! Laurie loved life and she loved others. Those who know her will miss her and she leaves a lasting footprint of genuine kindness along life’s path; may we follow it closely. Laurie is survived by her husband John VanderBerg; son, James VanderBerg; four siblings; soul sister, Marcia (Jerry) Hoke; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was also preceded in passing by a brother, Michael Bauer and infant brother, James Bauer.
