Obituary

Chad James King, age 35 of Mattawan, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. He was born on February 11, 1988, the son of James and Susan (Schlukebir) King.

Chad lived both a beautiful and complicated life. At a young age he had a passion for fast cars, tools, and the outdoors. He also had a love for working with his hands and fixing anything that came across his path. Chad put his skills to good use as a hard-working concrete laborer and welder. In earlier years, you could find him on the lake fishing or in the barn putting something together – determined to show us all his new creations.

Chad could lift a room with his infectious smile and generosity. He had a kind heart and wanted to fix the world of all its problems. No matter where he was in life, his greatest blessing and joy was his beautiful daughter, Ayla. There was no denying their fierce, unconditional love – they bonded over country music and the racetrack. Chad had a love for anything old and enjoyed taking trips down memory lane. He would never turn down a trip to Florida where he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Chad is survived by his loving parents, James and Susan King; his daughter, Ayla King; his sister, Kalee (Daniel) Carter and his nephew and niece, Kalex and Zoe.

Our love and prayers go out to our family. We have been so very blessed to have all of you in our lives. Chad, certainly a chip off the old block after Jim with his zest for life, a smile and warmth that makes everyone feel at home like Sue and a genuine kindness like Kalee. My first memories of Chad are sitting on our livingroom floor with Ayla or the peanut as we knew her then, getting his nails painted, his hair styled and playing with a christmas gift she had just received. It was the first time I had ever seen a father so happy to get a makeover. My most recent memory of Chad happened this summer when we needed it the most. We were fortunate enough to spend an afternoon with Chad, Ayla, Jim, Sue, Kalee, Dan, Kalex, Zoe, Gwen and Adam. It was an afternoon with a feeling of family, belonging and laughter. These are the things that will make me smile now and every moment on.
