Jack Mekemson peacefully left us on January 12, 2022. He shared his last precious moments with family and friends at home. He was raised in the Chicago area. While serving in the U.S. Air Force in London, England, Jack met his wife, Toni, of fifty-two years. They loved moving to Kalamazoo forty-six years ago where they could still pursue city living and raising a young family. He had a great sense of community and volunteered many years of his time assisting others. He was involved with the Northside Business Association and Kalamazoo Transportation Board. He coached his son’s soccer team for many years and in his career, he mentored those who needed help developing work and life skills. It was important to him to give back to the community that he so loved, and to help people reach their full potential. He had a close connection with nature, as evidenced by the beautiful garden sanctuary he created in the back yard of his home, and the family has fond memories of summer camping across the USA. He had a sharp intellect and a quick wit with a love for reading, music, theater, sports, and politics – after all, his degree was in political science and international relations. Jack’s willingness to share his knowledge and appreciation of all of these made him very good company. He and his friends participated in bowling, softball, and golf leagues over the years including the usual post activity celebrations. He was an amazing, gentle soul with quiet strength and will be missed by many. We will continue to raise a glass to him. Cheers to you Jack, all our love from Toni, Greer and Gavin. |
