May 7, 1934 - June 2, 2022 Shirley will be laid to rest privately at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park North. A memorial service to honor her life will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, beginning at 11:00 AM, with Rev. John Bothof and Fred DeYoung officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Centrica Care Navigators or Second Christian Reformed Church Education Fund, c/o the funeral home. |

Age 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 2, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Kalamazoo on May 7, 1934, the only daughter of the late Clarence and Grace (Kline) Hoekenga. Shirley was a gentle and kind women filled with grace and faith. She was a foundation for her family and her home and heart were always open to those in need. She was a faithful wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who leaves behind the legacy of a life well lived. She was a life-long member of Second Christian Reformed Church where her smile and cheerful presence will be missed. On August 28, 1951, Shirley married the love of her life, Howard DeVries who survives. Together they raised four loving children who survive, Dennis (Karen) DeVries, Don (Vicki) DeVries, Laurie (Jeff) VanderVeen and Sallie (Dan) Chilla; eleven grandchildren, Jen (Chad) Klaassen, Brian (Kristen) DeVries, Betsy (Matt) VanderMeer, Jill (Matt) Quemada, Tim (Tara) DeVries, Tom (Stephanie) DeVries, Amy (Matt) Wykstra, Scott (Jen) VanderVeen, Kevin VanderVeen, Dr. Katelyn (Alex) Chilla-DeHaan, Kyle Chilla; several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. She was also preceded in passing by a granddaughter, Lisa VanderVeen. |
