Age 76, passed away at Centrica Rose Arbor Place on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Chicago, IL, the daughter of the late Gustav and Josephine (Wedel) Conrad. She moved to southwest Michigan and in 1968 married the love of her life James R. Tomsa.
Her niece Nicole captured it perfectly when she said, “Aunt Sandy had a personality larger than life.” Sandra loved bright colors, big adventures, and grandiose gestures of generosity. She loved her family fiercely – often shown through gifts, invitations to join fun experiences, and spending time together.
She firmly believed that girls could do anything boys could do before that was a popular notion – and that was fully evidenced in how she raised her daughter – encouraging her to pursue her abilities in math and science and opening the world to her through travel throughout the US, Mexico, and Europe.
Sandra had a passion for learning which led to a career as a schoolteacher. She taught elementary school at Coloma for several years until leaving to raise her daughter.
She had a strong faith in the Lord and was an active member at Redemption Christian Assembly (now New Day Community Church). Above all Sandra loved her family and she was especially proud of her daughter and grandchildren. She loved big and lived big! The memories she leaves behind in those she loved will be cherished. She is survived by her husband, James Tomsa; loving daughter, Jill (Graham) McKeague; two grandchildren, Samuel and Emma McKeague; two sisters, Nancy (William) Backus and Jan (Bill) Tyng; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
