Dr. David S. Sprague

Dr. David Samuel Sprague, born on August 27, 1933, in LaGrange, Indiana, passed away on September 21, 2024. He was a devoted father, husband, psychiatrist, and naturalist with a deep love for life’s simple joys – good food and drink, music, friendship, and self-reflection. David’s passion for nature was evident throughout his life. He enjoyed taking long walks to identify birds, plants, and animals, drawing on a family tradition of hunting and farming. He was passionate about the outdoors, particularly fishing and hunting, and was also a lifelong musician, proficient in multiple instruments, including the old-time fiddle. His curiosity and love for learning were boundless—he immersed himself in reading every book he could find on subjects that intrigued him. David had a distinguished career as a psychiatrist, serving in multiple private practices and hospitals throughout his life. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1959 and was deeply dedicated to his patients’ well-being. David is survived by his children: Laura and her daughters, Imani and Heshima (and her son, Vincent); Will and his spouse, Eve, and their children, Luke and Olivia; and Annie and her husband, Lucas, with their children, Russell and Joni. He was predeceased by his daughters, Jen and Jill, as well as his brother Thomas. David was married twice—first to Judith, and later to his widow, Elizabeth. He is also survived by his brother Philip. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Madola. Throughout his life, David shared a close and enduring friendship with Ted Groat, his best friend for over 80 years. The two enjoyed deep conversations about philosophy, a reflection of their shared intellectual curiosity.
