August 21, 1936 - February 27, 2017 In accordance with his wishes cremation will take place and a celebration of his life will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017, beginning at 11:00 AM, at Valley Family Church, 2500 Vincent Ave., Portage, MI 49024 with Pastor Pam Roe. A visitation will be held at the church beginning at 10:00 AM, one hour prior to the service. |

Age 80, passed away at home on Monday, February 27, 2017 with family at his side. Robert was born in Chicago, IL, on August 21, 1936, the son of the late John and Myrtle (Wright) Thompson. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central and remained a life time resident of the Southwest Michigan area. Robert was kind and strong. He loved his family and friends and did his best to provide for them. He was a hard worker who retired from General Motors after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Automotive Union where he made many friends. When not working, Robert loved being outdoors hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time in Northern Michigan. He also took many memorable trips with his family across America. Robert was very knowledgeable about technology and had a small VCR and computer repair shop. He also knew how to have fun and enjoyed going to casinos. Above all, Robert loved his family; he cared for them deeply and at one point became the legal guardian of his granddaughter Alexandra (Javier) Hernandez Jr. He leaves them with many fond memories to cherish. On September 9, 1978 he was united in marriage to the late Jeanne (Brabon) Thompson. He was also preceded in passing by a brother, Ronald Thompson. He is survived by five children, Randy (Kim) Thompson, Rick (Teresa) Thompson, Deb (Darryl Warner) Clark, David (Deitra) Thompson, Laura (Mark Bouwman) Thompson; several grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two siblings, Jackie (Robert) Laylon and Barry (Carol) Thompson; nieces, nephews, friends and two great-great grandchildren on the way. |
