In 1970 she left Kalamazoo and moved to San Francisco, California in search of new opportunities. She began working for Harold E. Shugart Co. an Acoustical Ceiling Contractor. She performed all duties of a Secretary/Expediter. In 1971 to 1974 she worked for Amelco Industries, Electrical Contractors as an Executive Secretary. From 1974 to 1975 she worked as tenant coordinator Executive Secretary to the President of the civil engineering company that did the electrification installation of San Francisco’s BART mass transport system. She also coordinated the tenant development during the new and remodeled construction of 50 California Street, a thirty-six-story, 200,000 sq. ft. building near Embarcadero. Sandy and her staff performed all executive duties for the business owner. She expanded her knowledge by creating resumes for clients or creating letters for walk-in clients to mention a few. Sandy never turned down an opportunity to help someone. She coordinated yearly Christmas parties for clients to meet and network with other business owners. Sandy also did resumes for visually impaired clients which resulted the creation of Midwest Enterprises for the Blind in1993. She was one of four members on the Board of Directors and a founding Secretary/Treasurer. MWEB is still providing employment, benefit packages and opportunities for advancement.

After she retired from Executive Format, she continued to provide executive support to clients and friends, often travelling to their place of residence. When physician friend William Decker, M.D. LFAPA, published three history books about the public mental health system of Michigan, she provided major support preparing the manuscripts for several award-winning history books by author William A. Decker, M.D.
She met Rick Light, an Upjohn heir and a sculpture artisan, and became his personal assistant, assisting him in all aspects of his personal life and worldwide travels.

Sandy assisted long-time friends Leanne and daughter Cristina Powell in the creation of A Brighter Way, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity (www.abrighterway-cristina.org.) Sandy was an amazing person and will be remembered for always being fun, her great sense of humor, she loved to laugh, dance and “party hardy” especially to her favorite music of the 50’s and 60’s.
