Donald Richard Simmons, husband, father and cherished grandpa, passed away on April 20, 2026 after having been in home hospice care for the past 9 months. Don was born on June 8, 1939, in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Dayton and Edith (Cripe) Simmons. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1958 – 1964, while stationed in Key West. He spent 3 months off the coast of the Canary Islands waiting for John Glenn’s flight into space. Their ship was designated to retrieve Glenn if his flight was aborted. His service was extended for 6 months due to the Berlin Wall Crisis. His service was almost extended again due to the Cuban Missile Crisis. After the service Don was employed by Bronson Methodist Hospital for 28 years where he established their data processing department. From there he was involved in long-range planning for the hospital. This led to the formation of the Bronson Builders and Design company which he served as president. After BBD was dissolved, he was involved with forming the CSM company and was president for the 5 years that Bronson owned the company. After Bronson sold the CSM company he returned to the hospital as the Director of Maintenance, Housekeeping, BioMed and Security. Many years from his youth to middle age were spent on the back water of the Hodenpyl Dam in Mesick. He enjoyed waterskiing, fishing, mushrooming and riding dirt bikes. Later years were spent at his parent’s place on Lake Leelanau. Don was very family oriented. He would call his parents every day. He was always interested in what his grandchildren were up to. He enjoyed the tradition that began during Covid of the Friday night family cookout. He would ask “Are the kids coming over Friday night”? On January 10, 1976, Don married Nancy (Viel), who survives. They were able to celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. Also surviving are sons Dan (Julie), and Jeff (Sherri). Grandsons Kyle, Dayton, Austin, and Reed. Granddaughter Sara (Garrett) Walters. Great-grandchildren Graham and Lainey Walters. He was preceded in death by both of parents and sister Norma Simmons. His family will miss him greatly. The family wishes to thank Centrica Hospice team for the care they provided to Don.
