Jacob Edward Meyer “Jake”, went home to his Savior, Jesus Christ on June 16, 2021 after a long battle with cancer. Jake was born October 7, 1940 to M.J. and Jennie Meyer of Kalamazoo. When he was eight, his family moved to Tucson, Arizona where his father was a builder. Jake learned a lot working for his dad and later, used those skills as he contracted houses to be built and even later in rehabbing houses. At the age of twenty, Jake went to Calvin college where he met his wife, Mary. Jake and Mary moved back to Arizona for several years but returned to Michigan when the GM plant opened in 1965. Jake worked at G.M. for 33 plus years until the plant closed and he retired. After his retirement Jake worked at Senior Services and later at All Phase electric and Mall City Mechanical. While at G.M., Jake met Dick Cipri and Paul Domke who became his close friends and business partners in the storage unit business for many years. Jake was a willing servant for the Lord and served on the church council as either a Deacon or Elder many times through the years. He also served on the North Christian School Board and the Christian School Realty Board. He was hands on for many church projects through the years, from painting a church parsonage, church foyer, etc., to Thursday Cleanup Crew, to Operation Christmas Child. When his oldest son, David, learned to ski, Jake did as well and enjoyed skip trips with all his sons. They would go north to Sugarloaf or Searchmont and even to Colorado. Jake also enjoyed boating, both sail and power, and had many water “adventures”. Jake also became a tennis and golf enthusiast and enjoyed friendly competition with his sons. Jake enjoyed time spent rehabbing houses with son, Nathan. Together, they improved a number of homes. Besides his parents, Jake was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Betty Jean Meyer. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Mary and his family, sons David (Karna), Jeffrey, and Nathan Meyer, his beloved grandchildren, Joshua Meyer, Jeffrey Seelinger and Teagan Meyer. He is also survived by a brother, Jerry from Arizona and sisters in law Lois Parker (Harry), Carole (Larry) Alderink, John Holwerda (Evie), Robert (Kim) Holwerda and Debra (Les) Hayden, as well as many nieces and nephews. |
