THORNBURG, George E. Age 76, passed away November 27, 2021. George was born in Monette, Arkansas on November 22, 1945, the son of the late George Washington and Mary Sue (Cheatham) Thornburg. The family settled in Hartford, Michigan after leaving Arkansas when he was young.
George was a graduate of Hartford High School, class of 1964. He attended Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor and completed his Associate Degree in Business in 1967. He then graduated from Western Michigan University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Distributive Education and Business Administration. He worked in grocery retail beginning as a meat cutter, then produce manager, assistant manager, sales representative in a multiple county area, and grocery store manager. He spent most of his career as the Party Store Manager at Meijer on South Westnedge Avenue.
George met his wife Marilyn at Harding’s Friendly Market where they both worked. They married on July 23, 1971 and had two sons.
George enjoyed camping and fishing with his sons and father. He spent summer vacations with his family, tent camping in Michigan at various state parks, his favorite being Hoffmaster State Park. He also enjoyed attending his sons’ baseball and football games, working on his cars and staying in contact with his friends on the internet.
George is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Latus) Thornburg; sons, David (Jennifer) Thornburg, of Fortville, Indiana and Christopher (Valerie) Thornburg, of St. Joseph, Missouri; grandsons, Dylan Thornburg and Liam Thornburg; sisters, Emma (Ronald) Sefcik, of Hartford, Michigan and Janet (Garry) Melvin, of Lawrence, Michigan; special cousin, Bernice (Robert) Lightner; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.
