Age 82, died on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. Shirley was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 10, 1934, the daughter of the late Charles and Florence (Hockley) Benham. She graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in education. Shirley taught first grade for many years at Kalamazoo Public Schools and St. Mary’s Catholic School. On July 2, 1960, she was united in marriage to Dean R. Tyndall who survives. Shirley is also survived by her children, Marianne (Joseph Bordley) Tyndall and John (Emily) Tyndall; grandchildren, Bronwyn and Benham; sister, Barbara Miller; sister-in-law, Joan Hamann and several nieces and nephews. She was a woman of deep faith and a founding member of St. Martin of Tours Episcopal Church. Shirley was a profuse reader and especially enjoyed poetry. If she read something she thought someone else would appreciate she made sure to pass it on to them. Shirley was also a gifted writer. In her free time, she gave countless hours volunteering for many local non—profit organizations. Shirley had a great many friends; both recently met and those known for many, many years. She took delight in all who were around her. Shirley cared deeply for her family and led a life that will be admired and remembered by all who had the honor of knowing her. |
