Janet Louise VandenBos Pursley Wolf — educator, mentor, wife, mother, grandmother, world traveler, clothes horse, art and music lover, and good neighbor — died peacefully at Rose Arbor Hospice on May 26, 2026.

Born in Ottawa County, Michigan, in 1941 to Gerrit and Lura VandenBos, Jan grew up in Holland, Michigan, carrying with her a strong sense of discipline and curiosity, as well as pride in her Dutch heritage and hometown throughout her life. Bright and academically driven from an early age, she graduated from Holland High School a year ahead of her peers and then attended Western Michigan University, where she earned a degree in Education and met her first husband, Lee Pursley.

Teaching was not simply Jan’s profession — it was central to who she was. Beginning with fourth grade classrooms in Kalamazoo Public Schools and later at Miller Elementary School in Jackson County Schools, she devoted herself to helping children grow in confidence, character, and independence. She carried those same expectations into every part of her life, encouraging those around her to work hard, think critically, and remain engaged with the world.

Jan’s intellect was perhaps her most prized possession—she loved to think and solve complex problems. She was an avid reader of books and newspapers, a lover of music, art, theater, travel, and spirited conversation, and someone who approached life with enthusiasm. She delighted in discovering a new author, recipe, destination, or idea worth sharing.

After the devastating loss of Lee to leukemia in 1984, Jan demonstrated the resilience and determination that became one of the defining lessons of her life for her family. While raising teenagers and teaching full-time, she commuted to Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, studying late into the night and often isolating herself in hotels before exams to focus completely on her preparation. She graduated with honors, passed the Michigan Bar, entered private practice in Jackson, and later found a meaningful second career as a Trust Officer with First of America Bank, where her compassion, intelligence, and personal experience helped guide clients through some of life’s most difficult moments, often visiting them at home or helping them navigate everyday needs.

Jan married Dr. Frank Wolf, a Professor of Engineering at Western Michigan University, and together they built a life filled with art, travel, friendship, family, and community service. Their home on Woods Lake became the center of friendly dinners, book club discussions, and family gatherings. This special place is where grandchildren learned to fish, swim, cook, draw, and appreciate the simple pleasures of creativity, conversation, and local culture. There was always a thoughtful conversation, creative idea, or new adventure waiting with Frank and Jan.

Jan’s love of culture and civic engagement extended well beyond her career. She volunteered as a literacy mentor through the Literacy Council of Kalamazoo, helping adults gain the skills and confidence to improve their lives, meeting weekly with her students, and learning Zoom to continue lessons throughout the pandemic. She served on the boards of Fontana Chamber Arts and Friendship Village, volunteered with the League of Women Voters, and, alongside Frank, served as a docent at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, focusing on children’s groups and programs for the visually impaired.

Together, Jan and Frank traveled widely — from memorable extended stays in Paris and Italy to adventures in Peru, Australia, New Zealand, and Costa Rica, to regular trips to Chicago and New York, and New England to visit her daughter — yet Jan remained happiest at home on Woods Lake: reading on the deck, solving the New York Times crossword, watching wildlife in the yard, and sharing cold prosecco, conversation, and meals inspired by the Kalamazoo Farmers Market with family and friends.

Her grandchildren brought her immeasurable pride and joy. She celebrated their academic, professional, and personal accomplishments enthusiastically, while also challenging them to keep growing, keep asking thoughtful questions, work hard, try new things, and never lose their sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerrit and Lura VandenBos; her brother, John VandenBos; and her first husband, Lee Pursley.

Jan is survived by her husband, Frank Wolf of Kalamazoo; her children, Jennifer Pursley Jones of Marblehead, Massachusetts, and Brian Pursley of Horton, Michigan; her grandchildren, Darrin Pursley of Iron Mountain, Michigan, Andrew Pursley of Washington, D.C., and Aidan Pursley of Washington, D.C.; her stepsons, Christian Wolf and Alexander Wolf, both of Kalamazoo, and Nathaniel Wolf of Houston, Texas; and their children.

Her family will remember her not only for what she accomplished, but for the example she set: a life lived thoughtfully, courageously, intellectually, lovingly, humorously and always fully engaged with the world around her

Mark Richard Jenness was born August 11, 1945 in Jackson, Michigan the son of William Dempster Jenness and Arlene Faulhaber Jenness. He was proceeded in death by his parents and his siblings Lois Studley and William Jenness. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Cheryl Lyon-Jenness, sister-in-law, Carol Jenness, his nephews William Jenness (Terri) and Richard Jenness (Deborah), and his beloved great nieces and nephews including Elizabeth (Chris), Will, Caitlin, Matthew, and Alex.

Mark spent his life promoting and providing meaningful inquiry-based learning experiences designed to enhance understanding of and appreciation for the natural world. A largely self- taught naturalist, Mark was an avid reader and collector and as a young child began investigating the natural world near his Jackson, Michigan home. He continued that interest until the end of his life, and eventually enhanced his understanding of educational process through degrees from Nazareth College and Western Michigan University

At the suggestion of a Jackson area mentor, Mark visited the Kalamazoo Nature Center in 1965, and was hired as a counselor in the newly formed Day Camp program. He continued at the Nature Center until 1986, serving for most of that time as the Center’s Education Coordinator and Summer Program Director. Under his leadership, the Nature Center’s education program grew to include day and residence camps, school curriculum programs, adult and family events and programs, the traveling Earthmobile and many other activities for both children and adults. His weekly appearances on the locally produced Channel Three Clubhouse brought his knowledge of the natural world to an even wider audience.

After leaving the Nature Center, Mark began work on an EdD degree at Western Michigan University. His studies eventually led to experiences in the WMU Evaluation Center and to his position as director and senior researcher of the Science and Mathematics Program Improvement (SAMPI) project in WMU’s Mallinson Institute for Science Education. In his role at SAMPI, Mark worked with K-12 schools across the country to improve science and math instruction and learning. In 2012, to honor his contributions at both the Kalamazoo Nature Center and SAMPI, Mark received the George C Mallinson Award for Lifetime Achievement in the field of science education.

After his retirement in 2010, Mark continued to pursue several SAMPI projects but also enjoyed more time for travels especially around his beloved Great Lakes, more time to add to his many collections, more time to read, and most importantly more time to understand and enjoy the natural world.

William Graham Paige passed away Friday, May 22, 2026 at Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo with a good friend by his side.

Bill was born June 3, 1945 in Alpena, Michigan to Philip and Dorothy Paige. He is survived by his brother Robert Paige of Canton, Missouri and the daughter of his heart, Dawn Morse of Kalamazoo.

Bill received his early education at Alpena High School and Alpena Community College. Following that, he received a bachelor’s degree in business from Western Michigan University and a master’s degree in accounting from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He served honorably in the United States Navy for two years in Okinawa, Japan, where he was trained to be a translator in the Mandrin language.

After settling in Kalamazoo, Bill worked as an accountant in the business office of Gibson Guitar. When Gibson relocated its Kalamazoo headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee, he became one of the co-founders and an owner of Heritage Guitars, and managed the business office for the company. He was a loyal and dedicated worker and was sometimes described as being “married to the company.”

Bill was an avid and skilled trout fisherman whose goal was never an empty basket. He particularly enjoyed the streams around Bellaire, Michigan and Hixton, Wisconsin, and loved casting his reel in Shanty Creek, Ginch Creek, and the Trempealeau River.

He loved sports in all seasons and particularly enjoyed college basketball and making his picks for the Sweet 16 tournament brackets. A diehard Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers fan, Bill tuned in every season for the highs and lows, and was always hopeful for a super bowl win and another World Series from his favorite teams. Unfortunately, he never got either of these but in typical Bill fashion, he’d say there’s always next year and never give up hope.

Bill was a kind, quiet, caring person and one who never met a stranger. He was loved by many and will be missed and fondly remembered. May your creeks and streams be filled with trout splashing in the sunshine, Bill. We love you.

Linda Ruth Van Goeye, of Paw Paw, MI passed away on May 10, 2026, at the age of 76.

Linda lived a simple life, but the love, joy, and heart she carried within it were anything but small.

She spent 42 years working at Stryker Corporation in packaging and logistics, building a life grounded in loyalty, consistency, and quiet dedication. She loved to travel, treasured time with friends, and found happiness in experiences that brought wonder, laughter, and connection.

Linda had a deep love for animals, especially her beloved cats, whom she cared for like family. She had a tender heart and a gentle spirit that revealed itself most beautifully in the simple things.

One of Linda’s greatest joys was Disney — especially Mickey Mouse. Her face would light up with childlike excitement at the smallest reminders of the magic she loved so much. Her ability to imitate Mickey Mouse perfectly could instantly bring laughter and smiles to those around her. What may have seemed silly or small to others was, for Linda, a doorway into joy.

And perhaps that was one of her greatest gifts.

She reminded the people who loved her that life is not truly about possessions, status, or appearances. It is about laughter. Connection. Wonder. Shared moments. A warm heart. A smile that spreads across your face before you even realize it’s happening.

Those who knew Linda beyond the surface knew a woman full of empathy, understanding, and love. She touched more hearts than she likely ever realized and leaves behind memories that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.

For those who loved her, Mickey Mouse will never quite be the same again.

She will be deeply missed.

Linda is survived by a sister-in-law, Connie Van Goeye; nieces and nephews, Jeff (Sandy) Van Goeye, Shelly (Kevin) French, Eric (Kathy) Van Goeye; several great-nieces and nephews; many friends. Linda was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Andrew Van Goeye Jr., Raymond Van Goeye.

Marc John Clements age 64 of Kalamazoo passed away Wednesday evening, May 6, 2026. He was born in Manistee, MI, on November 28, 1961, to Fred and Ida “Inky” (Christianson) Clements, the eldest of four sons.

In 1972, the family moved from Manistee to Grand Rapids, MI. Marc enjoyed his classes at Northeastern Elementary and spent time in the 5th grade as Lieutenant Safety, something he was very proud of doing.

In 1978, the family moved to Kalamazoo, MI, where Marc attended Kalamazoo Central in the 10th grade. He attended Portage Central for the remainder of high school, where he played football and graduated in 1980. After graduation he spent the summer working at Glacier National Park in Montana and loved it. Once the summer ended, Marc traveled the California highways fueling his desire to travel more.

Once back, in Michigan, during the Reagan era, when jobs were scarce, he decided to try his luck in Detroit where he lived for 4 months. When nothing panned out he returned to Kalamazoo where he found work at Harding’s Market in the Cork Lane Shopping Center on Cork Street. Marc started working at Harding’s in 1981 and 16 years later he left to become a Route Driver for Staggs Vending. He worked for Staggs for 4 years and 50 weeks, until 2002.

Marc married in 1995 and welcomed his son Alex in June of 1998. At about 5 years old, Alex was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He became a spokesperson and goodwill ambassador for a couple of years. During that time frame he helped to raise over $5 million and travelled over 10,000 miles doing so. Alex passed away in April, 2025 at age 26, due to complications from his disease.

Marc graduated from KVCC in 2000 and transferred his credits to WMU. He graduated in 2004 from WMU with a dual major in History and Secondary Education.

While attending WMU, Marc was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He successfully completed treatment and became a cancer survivor.

Once Marc obtained his degree he became a substitute teacher for Kalamazoo Public Schools, where he taught for 8 years. Marc taught at 12 different schools in the KPS system, teaching all ages of kids and grades. Although he loved teaching, the best part of his day was sneaking away to eat lunch with Alex whenever they were in the same school.

Marc’s love for travel started in his teens. Marc was proud of the fact that he had visited 48 of the 50 states, but Michigan was always his favorite. His many travels throughout upper and lower Michigan gave him the opportunity to spend time taking pictures of beautiful scenery which was another favorite past time of his. Some of his favorite places he traveled to included, San Diego, San Francisco, Yosemite, Key West, and Orlando/Disneyworld. Disneyworld is where he enjoyed his first ever expresso.

His love for photography began in the 5th grade and he credits his then neighbor, Richard Lewis, for sparking his interest.

Marc loved music. His favorite group from day one was Van Halen. You couldn’t help but think of him whenever you heard one of their songs. He was always up for a concert, especially a road trip to see one of his favorite groups. His tastes in music ranged from Taylor Swift to Ronnie James Dio’s Rainbow and everything in between.

Over the years, Marc journaled a lot and became good at documenting his travels, feelings, observations and everyday life. Short stories were a favorite of his to write.

Marc had many pets in his lifetime but his favorite was his pet opossum who he named Joey. Joey was Marc’s for a short time but he described him as “the coolest pet he ever had.”

Marc’s quick wit, mischievous blue eyes, infectious laugh, outgoing personality and friendly nature made him a magnet for all types of people who crossed his path. If you were lucky to become a friend of Marc’s, you were a friend for life. He had the gift of being able to pick up where you left off, even if you hadn’t talked in years.

Marc’s wish is to be remembered as an adventure seeker, who was a lifelong Democrat, someone who was politically aware and passionate about current events, a father who loved his son beyond measure, a man with passion and love for photography, travelling, his friends, his family and smoking the finest weed.

Marc is preceded in death by his son, Alex. He is survived by his mother, Inky (Al) Morlock; father, Fred (Diane) Clements; brothers, Mike (Jodi) Clements, Brad (Brenda) Clements, Chadd (Colleen) Clements; longtime friend, Sara Conant; his daughter, Jessica Klepper; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and his extended family of friends.

Though her time here was far too short, Nicole lived fully, fiercely, and with a spirit that could never be forgotten. She filled her life with laughter, adventure, and deep love for the people around her. Nicole was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. She had a vibrant personality, a quick wit, and a sense of humor that could light up any room. She was an experienced hiker who traveled to Glacier National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Zion National Park, and many other parks and trails throughout her life. She also had a passion for learning and was an avid reader, becoming a familiar and cherished face at the Schoolcraft Library.

Above all else, Nicole loved her family. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her world and the greatest joy of her life. She treasured every milestone, every laugh, every moment spent together, and surrounded those she loved with unwavering support and affection. Her legacy will live on through the love she gave so freely and the memories she created with those fortunate enough to know her.

Nicole’s kind smile, warm hugs, comforting words, and infectious sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

Kenneth Robert Kline of Portage, Michigan — a devoted family man, proud engineer, and lifelong lover of the Michigan outdoors — passed away peacefully on May 4th 2026, at the age of 90.

Ken was born on September 2, 1935, in White Cloud, Michigan, to Alice May Kline and Robert F. Kline. He grew up in White Cloud and graduated from White Cloud High School in 1953. He became the first in his family to attend and graduate from college — earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in 1957, a milestone his family holds with great pride.

Ken went on to build a 30-year career at Consumers Energy, beginning in Jackson, Michigan in 1957 before relocating to Bay City in 1959. It was there that life took a wonderful turn: he met Linda Poch, and the two married in September of 1961. Together they built a full and happy life, welcoming their son Michael in 1963 — prompting a move to Kalamazoo — and their daughter Carrie in 1967, after which the family settled in Jackson, the town they would call home for decades.
Outside of work, Ken was most at home in the woods and on the water. He spent decades hunting and fishing the lakes and forests of Michigan, and could be found on the golf course during his time at Consumers Energy. He was a member of the Kappa Delta Psi fraternity and briefly served in the Air Force Reserves in 1959, a period of service he carried with quiet dignity.

Ken carried deep losses in his final years with characteristic grace — the passing of his beloved wife Linda in 2011, and the heartbreaking loss of his daughter Carrie in 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert (1909–1996) and Alice (1915–1994), his wife Linda (1941–2011), and his youngest child Carrie (Brian) Konieczka (1967–2021).

He is survived by his son Michael (Janet); grandchildren Rachel (Dyllin) Patrick, Kenny Kline, and Kristen (Jeremy) Frisby; and great-grandchildren Isla Patrick and Kaia Frisby.
