In compliance with  Executive Order 2020-11, Richard’s funeral will now be held privately. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, c/o the funeral home.

Obituary

Age 58, passed away at Bronson Commons on March 14, 2020, with family at his side. He was born in Kalamazoo on April 14, 1961, the son of the late Harold and Merle (Smith) Councell. Richard was a kind, loving and generous man. He loved to hunt and enjoyed being in nature. He was a passionate racer and race fan who was a regular face at the Kalamazoo and Galesburg Speedways. He was athletic and enjoyed sports, especially softball. He participated in the Can-Am Softball Tournament, was a pitcher, umpire and coach and took great joy in watching his nieces and nephews play. He loved his pets and considered them his “children.” Richard’s kind smile and loving nature will be missed by all who knew him. On September 8, 2001, he married the love of his life Katie Councell who survives. He is also survived by five siblings, Arlene (Ed) Miller, Brenda (Eldon) Nutter, Paulette (Steve) Chapin, Rose Councell and Mary Councell; many nieces, nephews and friends; his loving “Hoodlum Cats” and loyal dog, Fudge. He was also preceded in passing by a brother Harold Councell and two cats, “Dommie” and “Tiggie.”
