Aura Maria Provancher, age 82, passed away peacefully in her sleep Thursday afternoon, March 5, 2026, at Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Aura was born in Timbio, Colombia, South America on August 3, 1943, the daughter of Gerald Bryan and Herlinda Ordoñez. Orphaned at a young age, Aura moved to Cali, Colombia where she worked for a time in a factory for Quaker Oats Company. Noticed for her intelligence and work ethic, she quickly climbed the ranks becoming a receptionist, bookkeeper, and then accounts manager for Quaker Oats. In Cali, she met and married her husband of 66 years, Lawrence “Larry” Edward Provancher, from Kingsford, Michigan on June 6, 1962. Aura immigrated to the United States in 1963, establishing a residence in Portage, Michigan. She taught English as a second language for 30 years in the Kalamazoo Public School System. Aura was known best for being a kind and generous person and for her love of music. She could often be heard whistling through the hallways of Woods Lake Elementary, where she taught, and singing to her grandchildren or while playing cards with her sisters. She was a labor union representative for the local, regional, state, and national teachers unions, which led to her traveling across the country and earning the coveted Kalamazoo Education Association’s Sisyphus Award. Over the years, Aura traveled the world, visiting Thailand, Guatemala with the International Links of Friendship, Mexico, and many European countries. Before moving to Grand Rapids, Aura was a longtime parishioner of St. Catherine’s of Siena and also served on the Board of a non-profit organization that provides shoes for elementary students in Kalamazoo County, the First Day Shoe Fund. She was a founding member of the “31 Club” at Sentinel Pointe and a friend to several Sentinel Pointe residents and staff. Aura is survived by her children, Ines (Mike) Heinz, Mark Provancher, and Karen (Erik) Kostbade; grandchildren, Sam (Kelianne) Heinz, Jared Heinz, Andrew Provancher, Benjamin Provancher, Emily Kostbade, and Henry Kostbade; two great grandchildren, Brezlin and Brynlee Provancher; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse; and sisters, Irma Arias and Mary Muñoz.
