The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, August 9, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service to honor his life will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, beginning at 10:00 a.m., at Community Presbyterian Church, 811 Gorham Ln. Kalamazoo, MI 49006; the family will receive friends beginning at 9:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the Community Presbyterian Church or to the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission, c/o the funeral home.

Age 67, passed away at Bronson Methodist Hospital on Sunday, August 4, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Kalamazoo on February 8, 1957, the son of the late William and Eleanor (Lanting) Nieuwenhuis. David was raised to have a strong faith in the Lord and an honest character. He was a loyal husband, dedicated father and involved grandfather. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family and friends; he leaves behind wonderful memories to cherish. He worked hard as a general contractor for over 30 years to provide security and opportunity for his family. When not working he enjoyed spending time boating and was proud to have earned his captain’s license in 2021. He also enjoyed building and racing drag cars with his sons, woodworking, vacationing on cruises with Cheryl and playing model trains with his son’s and grandchildren. Dave fell in love and became a member of Community Presbyterian Church he was honored to be head of the building committee to find a new building and assist in their building projects. He was immensely proud of his family, and he never missed an opportunity to work with his sons and grandchildren; he always did his best to be present at their special events. David’s smile, laughter and strength will be missed by all who love him. On May 20, 1977, he married Cheryl (Bogema) Nieuwenhuis who survives. He is also survived by four sons, Matt (Lisa) Nieuwenhuis, Greg (Sara) Nieuwenhuis, Chris (Jami) Nieuwenhuis, Nic Nieuwenhuis; grandchildren, Sydney, Cody, Landon, Logan, Hailey, Evan, Chloe, Aubrey Nieuwenhuis; sisters, Sheri (Dave) Shon, Caren Wierenga, Marcia (Dave) Miyagawa; brother, Mark Nieuwenhuis Sr.; many, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
