Park St., Kalamazoo, MI 49007, beginning at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Julie Kline officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 AM, one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Rose Arbor Hospice Residence or the West Michigan Cancer Center, c/o the funeral home.

Age 47, passed away at Rose Arbor on Saturday, December 8, 2018, with his loving family at his side. He was born in Muskegon, MI, on October 26, 1971, the son of Edgar and Mary Jane (Watterworth) Geerlings who survive. Derek was a graduate of Mona Shores High School Class of 1990 where he made lasting friendships which were always important to him. He then attended and received his degree in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1994. He remained a loyal U of M fan for life. Derek had a wonderful personality, giving heart and terrific sense of humor. He had a positive attitude and outlook on life, even when facing his most difficult times. Derek was a hard worker who exceled in the banking world. He took pride in his profession and built meaningful relationships with his co-workers and customers. When not working he enjoyed golfing and making model airplanes. He was passionate about WWII history and aircraft and could often be found volunteering his time at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. He believed in giving his time and gifts. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church where he was involved with the Finance Committee, First Care as well as the ASP program. His smile and warmth in the pew will be missed! Above all Derek loved his family and friends. He was immensely proud of his only daughter Hannah and was always involved in her activities. Though too short, he lived a life of love and passion, and he leaves behind the legacy of a life well lived. On August 26, 2000, he married the love of his life, Molly (Hamet) Geerlings, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter, Hannah; in-laws, Bob (Carol) Hamet; sisters-in-law, Amy (Cheri) Hamet, brothers-in-law, Peter (Olatz) Hamet and Ryan (Allie) Hamet; two nephews, Ander and Ian; a niece, Libe; other family and many close friends.
