Don was born in 1920, the son of Dr. Earl W. May and Evelyn (Roehm) May of Highland Park, MI. Don graduated from Kenyon College and Wayne University College of Medicine. In 1943 he married the former Jane Parker of Gambier, Ohio. After serving in the Army Medical Corp he arrived in Kalamazoo as Bronson Hospital’s first resident in internal medicine. He remained in the private practice of internal medicine until 1989, after which he served as Medical Director for Visiting Nurse and Hospice Services of Southwest Michigan until 1999. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Kenyon College in 1998. He was an active member of St. Luke’s church, Life member of Christian Medical & Dental Society, and Life member of NAACP. His participation with Christian Medical & Dental Society provided opportunities for medical missionary experiences in Honduras, Belize and Dominican Republic from 1977-1990. Dedicated to volunteering, he was especially enthusiastic about his participation with The Forgotten Man Ministry at the Kalamazoo County Jail from 2003-2010. Don’s interests and endeavors were varied. Over four summers he enjoyed sailing the Great Lakes with his wife and son. From ages 70-77, he was a United States Masters swimmer, competing on the national level. At age 80, he rekindled his artistic talent and love of oil painting. His portraits of “People Who Make a Difference” were on exhibit in 2009 at Bronson Hospital. Don is survived by his wife, Jane and their children; Nancy (Tom) Meiron, Susan (Mike) Fitzgerald, Janice Livesay, John (Sveri) May; nine grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
