James Lawrence Murphy, age 87, passed away at Bronson Hospital on January 24, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Kalamazoo on November 25, 1938, the son of the late Gibson and Bernice (Powers) Murphy. Jim was a kind and loving man who lived life to the fullest. On September 13, 1958, he married the love of his life, Diann (Miles) Murphy who survives. They walked through life together for 67 years. Jim worked hard as the owner and operator of JL Murphy Construction. James was a dedicated and involved father who took great joy in watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. He had a passion for being outdoors, was an avid hunter and enjoyed Big Game hunting trips throughout North America. He enjoyed snow skiing in the wintertime and raced snowmobiles competitively. Jim always looked forward to his time away in Palmetto, FL, where he and Diann made many friends. Jim knew how to have a good time and always brought laughter and joy to those around him. His smile and laughter will be missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Diann; five children, Michael Murphy, Shawn (Tony) Hrab; Bridget (Don) Hilborn, Shane (Missy) Murphy, James “J.L.” Murphy Jr., Lawrence Arnt; twelve grandchildren, Colton, Chanell, Heather, Heidi, Haley, Anthony, Amber, Autumn, Chad, Beau, Andrew, Hunter; many great-grandchildren; sister, Jackie Wolthuis; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was also preceded in passing by a half-brother, William Murphy.
