Jan Kay Estes (née Wertz), 70, of Comstock, Michigan, passed away on January 3, 2026. She was born on August 20, 1955, to Lois Jean Wertz and Robert Ellsworth Wertz. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Brown II, Doug Estes, and Carl “Mike” DeMink, as well as her parents and her brother, Robert Steven Wertz, and her beloved pets, Solow Jean Barker, Buster, and Mitts. Jan is survived by her son, Robert Brown III; grandchildren Mercedas (Justin) Brown, Douglas (Michelle) Brown, Analysa (Kyle) Godden, Robert Brown, Logan Brown, and Gabriella Mulder; and great-grandchildren Addisyn, Kinsley, Hudson, Cooper, and Camryn. She is also survived by her siblings Peggy (Milt) Harrison, Elaine (Dana) Lewnfield, and Don (Nancy) Wertz, along with many nieces and nephews. A self-taught photographer, Jan loved capturing her family, her gardens, and her favorite animals, especially turtles. With a crochet hook in one hand and a joint in the other, she spent countless hours creating handmade items for those she loved. She took pride in her nails, enjoyed life’s simple comforts, and worked for many years at Stryker Instruments. Jan was unapologetically herself—a badass grandma who said what she thought, did what she wanted, and never sugar-coated a thing. She had a “say it like it is” attitude, didn’t give a damn what anyone thought, and loved her family fiercely on her own terms. She will be remembered for her creativity, independence, warmth, and the one-of-a-kind personality that could make you laugh, roll your eyes, and love her all at the same time.
