On December 23, 2025, the world lost a truly original character, and heaven gained a man who likely arrived revving an engine and humming a tune. Michael I. Peterson, age 66, of Portage, passed away peacefully at Centrica Rose Arbor Place. Born August 25, 1959, in Evanston, Illinois, Michael was the son of Jack and Joan (Venne) Peterson. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and went on to retire as a journeyman electrician from American Axle in Three Rivers. Mike lived life loud and fast. If it had two wheels or a great beat, he was all in. Motorcycles were his therapy, music was his soundtrack, and both were usually enjoyed at a volume that suggested ear protection was optional. On September 20, 1980, in Kalamazoo, Michael was united in marriage to Cheryl (Bellis) Peterson, who survives. Also surviving are his two children, Chad (Stephanie) Peterson and Jaime Owen; four grandchildren, Avarie and Sully Peterson, and Jaelynn and Wyatt Owen; his father, Jack Peterson; two sisters, Jennifer Peterson and Mary Peterson; a sister-in-law, Michele Peterson; and several nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Peterson, and his brother, Jeff Peterson. Mike believed life was meant to be enjoyed, not tiptoed through. He taught those around him how to laugh at themselves, savor the moment, and keep moving forward no matter what road they were on. While his family is heartbroken to say goodbye, they are certain he would want this moment to include laughter, great music, good food, and maybe a motorcycle rumbling in the background—just so everyone knows he made it safely to his next adventure.
