Anthony (Antonio/Tony) Villarreal passed away peacefully on the evening of July 2, 2020, after a long battle with cancer. He was 95. Growing up in East Chicago, Indiana, upon graduation from High School at the age of 17, Tony enlisted in the US Army and served in World War II as an Army Medic. He saw combat in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. Upon his Honorable Discharge, Tony settled in Michigan to raise his family. He was proceeded in death by the love of his life, his beloved Betty Breese Villarreal. He is survived by his daughters: Sandra Villarreal, Susan Villarreal, Jane Standish and Fran Dwight; his brother Raul Villarreal; his grandchildren: Tom Standish, Erin Dwight, Jess Donovan, Justin Donovan and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and numerous friends, fans and fellow musicians. Tony’s life and heart were best shown through his music. The melodies, chords and choruses gave him joy and offered the escape that music can provide. His happiest times were spent jamming with his musician friends and performing for others. A special mention to his closest friends: Earle Hyde, Larry DeYoung, John Reimer and Rebecca Massey, who share the love of music and understand the bond that is forged with a communal chord, and his niece Cyndi Greenwood. Tony spent his final months in the loving care of the wonderful staff at the Community Living Center, Veterans Administration, Battle Creek Michigan, where he made many friends. “Tony” Villarreal will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery, at a date to be determined.
