Obituary

Age 70, went to be with the Lord on December 26, 2023, with loved ones caring for her. She was born in Kalamazoo on December 4, 1953, the daughter of the late Berend and Winifred (Sportel) Valkema. Carol had a strong faith in the Lord which was the foundation of her character. She grew up going to church and was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church where her smile and faith will be missed. She worked hard as an accountant for the City of Kalamazoo for several years. During her tenure there, Carol was known as the person to go to when something needed to be done. She had a selfless heart and was always willing to help others. When not working she enjoyed shopping, going out and about and visiting with family and friends. Though she never had children of her own, her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews quickly became her “adopted children and grandchildren” whom she loved. She was a regular presence at their school and sporting events, and she was always there to lend a word of encouragement. Carol leaves behind the legacy of a life well lived and her warmth and laughter will be missed by all who loved her. She is survived by two loving sisters, Dorothy (Ron) Koetje, Mary (Steve) Zichterman; nieces and nephews, Wendy (Jason) Becker, Todd (Ashley) Koetje, Jodi (Jake) Jonkman, Erin (Jeremy) Geik, Nathan (Lisa) Zichterman; several great-nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

What words can be used to describe Carol? I can’t ever recall her being cross with anyone and was always one to help. I knew Carol from working with her at KDPS, but, closer when she was the shared secretary in the Training Division. She was a special person as one got to know her better. To her family I share your sorrow and she will always be one of fond memories. I vow to keep her in my prayers. Godspeed Carol. 🙏
