Obituary

Christopher Keith Mumma, born August 12, 1979, left our lives, all too soon on March 31, 2023. He will be greatly missed by his parents, Keith and Sally Mumma; sister, Susan Mumma and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Otis and Elmina Mumma and Howard and Betty Lee.

Chris was a graduate of Kalamazoo Loy Norrix High School and Kalamazoo Valley Community College. He found his love for camping and hiking through Boy Scout Troop #205, especially with trips to Isle Royale and Philmont Scout Ranch. As one who loved the outdoors, each summer, he and his dad would bicycle in the Hotter than Hell fund raiser for Grace Children’s Hospital in Haiti. He frequently enjoyed helping his dad during photography shoots.

For the past 17 years, Chris worked as the Assistant General Manager for Waldo’s Campus Tavern. Over this time, he met many friends who meant a lot to him. He often shared funny stories of his co-workers and friends with his family. Our thanks to all of Chris’ co-workers and friends for their generosity through this time with gifts, visits, food, and calls.

From the friends and family that knew and loved him, Chris will always be a gentle giant, our Sasquatch, the blunt big brother, a sweet friend, a great person, a beautiful presence, and one who gave the best hugs. He was a big guy with a bigger heart. As one friend shared, “He will be missed and loved by all who have been lucky to have met the man.”

Mumma was such a warm, loving and kind soul. His bear hugs were legendary, and his Chewy Chewbaka impressions were equally legendary. Anyone who had the honor of knowing him will be heartbroken and miss his wonderful personality. He was himself a local attraction at Waldo’s. If you didn’t want to stop for a beer, you wanted to stop to see if Mumma was working so you could get a big bear hug and hear his Chewbaka impersonation! I have so many years of wonderful memories that include Mumma. I still can’t believe the news, and I send all of his and our Waldo’s family huge hugs and love! To his parents, thank you for raising such an incredible human. He touched so many lives, and made the world a much better place! ❤️
