Obituary

Daniel Louis Smith, age 71, of Comstock, MI, passed away at Bronson Hospital on May 14, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Louisville, KY, on June 25, 1954, the son of the late Donald M. and Dorothy (Reynolds) Smith. He spent his childhood in Southern Illinois and on July 29, 1972, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served our country with honor. After being discharged he returned to Illinois to work on the family farm. He would later move to Southwest Michigan and began working as a truck driver. Daniel had a kind heart and was filled with compassion and generosity. He savored the peace and quiet of being at home but always took time to tell those he loved what they meant to him. He had a passion for gardening and growing plants. He also loved traveling the open road on his motorcycle and was a loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers. Above all Daniel loved his family and was especially proud of his stepchild and grandchildren and always was excited to add a new addition to the family. On 1989, he fell in love with Sheila Blanchard who remained by his side. Daniel will be missed and remembered by all who loved him. He leaves to cherish his memory, life companion, Sheila Blanchard; stepchild, Shane (Krista) Courtney; grandchildren, Drew (Pink) Courtney, Seth Courtney, Eric (Arie) Courtney, Rily Courtney; great-grandchild, Stella Mae Courtney; siblings, Donald “Rick” (Sheila) Smith, Timothy Smith, David Smith and Angela Young; many nieces, nephews extended family and friends. He was also preceded in passing by a brother, Robert Smith.

46 years ago today we were married. Thank you, Dan, for my two beautiful babies, who have since grown into wonderful people and are doing well. We both found our happily ever after, just not with each other. Rest in Peace.
