David J. Shirey

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, January 9, 2021, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1628 East G Ave., Parchment, at 11:00 a.m. with Msgr. Mike Hazard as Celebrant. Obituary

Aged 66, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021, at his home. Dave was born in Marquette, MI, on August 13, 1954, the son of William and Jane Elizabeth (Bjork) Shirey. On September 6, 1975, he married Jacqueline “Jackie” Quick who survives him. He graduated from Portage Central High School where he participated in cross country. In his early adult life he enjoyed his 1972 Mach I Mustang, which he gave up for the responsibilities of fatherhood. In 1973, he started working for Brown Paper Company and retired from there when it was known as Georgia Pacific in 2007. There, he was the self-proclaimed #1 Paper Cutter Operator. He was a fixture at the Corner View Café in Parchment until it closed in 2019. He served on the Parchment Library Board when the new building was built in 1989. Dave was an avid Green Bay Packers Fan and was a shareholder in the Packers organization since 1997. He enjoyed going to the annual shareholders meeting every year with his son, Jock. Besides his wife, Dave is survived by his sons, Brian (Mary Grace) Shirey of Kalamazoo; Jock (Kimberly) Shirey of Lansing; grandchildren, Willa Lehigh and Todd Shirey; sister, Susan (Tom) Smith of Edwardsburg, MI; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Kathleen Shirey.

He was my brother in law. He helped me get through history when I was getting low grades. David also helped me learn how to drive a car. Especially going around curves and turning the corners. I will miss him immensely.

Knew Dave for years growing up in Portage. Dave attended Old Pershing School one year behind me back on the day. Later years went to sports events with Steve Merchant (dc) Bill Baldwin and myself. Will be missed. Rest in peace Dave

Dave and I were friends all the way through school, K-12. I still remember him running down the ramp at Pershing Elementary onto the playground, making dolphin sounds and saying he was Flipper! Years later I would run into him in Parchment, and he was still the great guy I grew up with!! Rest In Peace Dave!
