Derek E. Geerlings
October 26, 1971 – December 8, 2018
In accordance with his wishes, cremation will take place and a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at First United Methodist Church, 212 S. Park St., Kalamazoo, MI 49007, beginning at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Julie Kline officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 AM, one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Rose Arbor Hospice Residence or the West Michigan Cancer Center, c/o the funeral home.
Obituary
Age 47, passed away at Rose Arbor on Saturday, December 8, 2018, with his loving family at his side. He was born in Muskegon, MI, on October 26, 1971, the son of Edgar and Mary Jane (Watterworth) Geerlings who survive. Derek was a graduate of Mona Shores High School Class of 1990 where he made lasting friendships which were always important to him. He then attended and received his degree in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1994. He remained a loyal U of M fan for life. Derek had a wonderful personality, giving heart and terrific sense of humor. He had a positive attitude and outlook on life, even when facing his most difficult times. Derek was a hard worker who exceled in the banking world. He took pride in his profession and built meaningful relationships with his co-workers and customers. When not working he enjoyed golfing and making model airplanes. He was passionate about WWII history and aircraft and could often be found volunteering his time at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. He believed in giving his time and gifts. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church where he was involved with the Finance Committee, First Care as well as the ASP program. His smile and warmth in the pew will be missed! Above all Derek loved his family and friends. He was immensely proud of his only daughter Hannah and was always involved in her activities. Though too short, he lived a life of love and passion, and he leaves behind the legacy of a life well lived. On August 26, 2000, he married the love of his life, Molly (Hamet) Geerlings, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter, Hannah; in-laws, Bob (Carol) Hamet; sisters-in-law, Amy (Cheri) Hamet, brothers-in-law, Peter (Olatz) Hamet and Ryan (Allie) Hamet; two nephews, Ander and Ian; a niece, Libe; other family and many close friends.
Derek was a true gentleman but more importantly, a loving husband and devoted father. I was privileged to have spent many wonderful hours on the golf course with Derek as well as working with him on various financial projects. The Geerlings are in my prayers.
Derek was a great low key guy and will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
Derek was a great man and will truly be missed by many. Molly, Hannah and the entire family have been and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.
Only knew Derek from our golf league and he was one of those guys you looked forward to playing with. Always had a positive outlook and a great sense of humor. I will miss him…my prayers are with the family.
I was blessed to have the opportunity to work with Derek for the last 7-8 years. I will miss his smile, laugh and incredibly funny jokes! Derek was such an integral part of the office. He was so very proud of his family – he adored Molly & Hannah, along with his Mom & Dad. I would occasionally make dinner for the family and I would ask Derek what his favorite meal was. He always said “Baked Spaghetti”. I then asked what his second favorite was and he would say “Baked Spaghetti”. So Baked Spaghetti it was! Derek was a very special guy and the world is missing one of its brightest stars. Peace to you, My Friend.
Derek was truly a nice guy. He would always have something funny to say and put a smile on you face. We’ll miss him walking the dog in his yellow (maize) sweatpants.
