Obituary
Age 91, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2021. Elaine was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on November 22, 1929, the daughter of the late McKinley “Mack” and Violet (Benson) Kooi. She is survived by her children, Mark (Sue) Sweetland, Lori (Roger) Eriksen and Diane Sweetland; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Elaine was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Kooi; sister, Ardith VandenBerg and granddaughter, Ashley Eriksen. Elaine had a strong faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and with that faith she was able to endure both the difficult and happy times of life. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she served on the Alter Guild. An avid sports fan, Elaine enjoyed watching all types of sports and knew all the players by name. Elaine was also a Master Duplicate Bridge player in the Kalamazoo area for many years. She was a caring person, a good listener and had many close friends. The family would like to thank Elaine’s friend of 80+ years, Rosemary Appelgren for her love, friendship and support over the years. My condolences to Mark, Lori, Diane, and the entire Sweetland family. I have so many fond memories from the old days when our parents were friends and you lived on Rose Street. I remember beach vacations at Crystal Lake and Lake Michigan. Our moms had lots of adventures together and played a lot of Bridge. Your mom always had a smile on her face and we always loved visiting you. I am glad she lived a long and active life. You will have many memories to cherish always.

My condolence to the entire Sweetland family, but especially to my friend Lori. I could not find an address to send you a card. I have fond memories of spending a lot of time at your house in my early teens. I believe I spent close to a week during the blizzard/snowstorm of 1967. None of us wore boots that day. We were sent home early. I went to your house at my parent’ direction to seek shelter. Many days later I walked down the middle of Westnedge Street hill towards my home. My dad walking to meet me in the middle. I always felt welcomed and part of the family. My husband have missed seeing Lori and Mrs. Sweetland at Meijer’s the past few years. I only met Elaine once as a young girl. However, I know her legacy, life and love will continue for so many years to come. I look at her granddaughter, Calli as the sister I was never able to have, but God brought us together. Calli Elaine, will forever carry on your love and family legacy. You are a wonderful woman, Elaine, and all who knew and loved you will miss you deeply.
