Obituary

Harold James Van Dyke was called home to be with his Savior on July 1, 2026. Harold was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on April 29, 1951, the son of the late Thomas and Nina (Kannegieter) Van Dyke. Harry was a life-long resident of the Kalamazoo area, and spent his years being quietly and consistently faithful in all circumstances. He and Janice Kay Broekema were joined in marriage on June 3, 1972. They shared many years together, often enjoying Sunday afternoon drives and trips to Lake Michigan. In 1985, they expanded their family with the adoption of their son Steven. Harry faithfully cared for Janice throughout her declining health until her passing in 2018. In later years he found companionship with his fiancée, Laurie East, with whom he enjoyed biking, playing cards, spending time with family & friends, traveling, and enjoying the outdoors. Harold served in the United States Army Reserve and received an honorable discharge in 1975. He began working as an HVAC apprentice and janitor before starting a career as an electrician at the Upjohn Company, later moving into a management role in maintenance, and eventually retiring from Pfizer. Harry was well respected by his colleagues and took great pride in his work. Harry began each day in God’s Word, and his open Bible was a familiar sight on the kitchen table throughout the years. He faithfully attended Southridge Reformed Church for many years, and North Park Reformed Church for the last 8 years. In those churches, he served in various capacities, including electrical work and ushering for many years. One of Steve’s earliest memories is accompanying Harry to church around age 3 or 4 while he worked on projects such as fixing the timer for the church sign. In his retirement years, he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and especially his granddaughters. The granddaughters fondly remember him taking them to Culver’s and the Root Beer Stand for dinner, playing hockey in the basement, racing remote-control cars in his house, and coming to their choir & band concerts, soccer games, and musical performances. Having faithfully finished his earthly race, Harold is survived by his son & daughter-in-law Steven & Jessica Van Dyke; fiancée Laurie East; cherished granddaughters Abigail, Johanna, Charlotte, and Caroline; brothers Roger Van Dyke, and David Van Dyke; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Janice Van Dyke; parents Thomas & Nina Van Dyke; sister Norma Sootsman.

On behalf of everyone at Kalamazoo Valley Gleaners, we extend our deepest condolences to the VanDyke family. Harry was a faithful volunteer who served alongside his brother, Dave, in our packaging room. His joy for serving others was evident every time he walked through our doors, and his kind, servant-hearted spirit was a blessing to our staff, volunteers, and the countless people around the world who will be nourished by the meals he helped prepare. Harry will be deeply missed by the entire KVG family. We are grateful for the privilege of serving alongside him and will continue to thank God for the lasting legacy of compassion and faith he leaves behind. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time.
