Age 64, passed away unexpectedly on August 16, 2021. James was born in San Diego, CA, on October 19, 1956, the son of the late James Zimmerman Sr. and Sandra (Gearhart) Zimmerman. Known as Jim, Jimmy, Dad and Grandpa to his many friends and loving family members, Jim was a Michigander through and through and raised his family in Portage.  The proud owner of Portage Heating and Air, Jim used his skills and know-how to build a successful business and improve area homes for friends and family alike. Indifferent to Michigan’s worst weather, he always put his family first and would drop whatever he was doing to help anyone. Often called by panicked daughters for car repairs, bad air conditioners, or sparking outlets, Jim was always ready to jump in and save the day for whoever needed him.  He was a hero to his daughters and the fun grandpa to his grandkids. Jim was a loyal and passionate Michigan football fan, with a noted dislike of the Spartans and Buckeyes.  He enjoyed listening to rock and roll, reading car magazines and books about military history, and spoiling his cats. He was known to his grandkids as Grandpa with the “good cookies,” someone you wouldn’t dare feed a raisin to, and a guy to hang out with if you wanted to have a good time.  Jim was known for his entertaining stories about his shenanigans with his cousins and brother and would often regale you of his tales after a few “Jim’tinis.”  Jim Zimmerman was a good man, a decent man, and a caring man.   A stubborn German with a heart of gold. Above all Jim loved his family. He found no title or honorific better than “Dad” and “Grandpa Jimmy.”  He was a loving father, dedicated grandfather, an amazing uncle, and faithful brother. He leaves behind the legacy of a life well-lived and he will be missed by all who knew him. James is survived by his two daughters, Nicole (Sean) Devine, Danielle (Justin) Buck; six grandchildren, Fiona and Bridget Devine, Tristin, Lola, Callan and Henry James Buck; a brother, Ed (Cathy) Zimmerman; his nephews Jeff (Becky) and Scott Zimmerman; his friends/cousins/alibi providers Mike, Steve, Pat, Sherry, Cathy, Russ, Jeff, and Mary Kay; and longtime business partner Keith.
