In accordance with her wish, cremation will take place and a celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 11:00 a.m., to 3:00 p.m., at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1332 Branch St., Kalamazoo, MI 49001. Memorial Contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, in c/o the funeral home.
Obituary
Janet Arlene Laws, age 86, passed away at her home on September 1, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Kalamazoo on July 6, 1940, the daughter of the late Kryn Cornelius and Catherine (Nuyen) Brand. Janet would remain a lifelong resident of the area. On June 16, 1962, she married the love of her life Wayne R. Laws. They enjoyed many years together filling each with special memories. Janet was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was selfless with her time and gifts, and her heart and home were always open to those in need. She knew the importance of being a good listener and always did so without judgment. She supported her family and encouraged those around her. In their youth she took time to coach the kids little league softball and took many fun camping trips. Later in life she enjoyed doing crafts and spent many years in Shipshewana. She also enjoyed going out to eat and trips to the casino and was a loyal Detroit Tigers fan. Above all Janet loved her family and was especially proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Janet’s smile. Laughter and kindness will be missed by all who loved her. She is survived by her loving husband, Wayne Laws; children, Robin (Lorie Lovejoy) Howard; Ryan Laws, Renee (Rick Grady) Laws; grandchildren, Cody Laws, Darren (Karley) Howard, Dustin (Melissa) Howard, Clairisa Laws; four great-grandchildren, Jamie and Levi Howard, Skylar and Summer Howard; siblings, Jim (Carmen) Brand, Jean Brand, Jeff (Kathy) Brand, Jill Culp; beloved friends, Connie, Barb and Cathy who never hesitated to help; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Cody Laws for his love and dedication shown to his grandparents during Janet’s final days.
