Joan Caryl Sickles (née Herman), aged 86, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Joan was the daughter of Caryl and Harriet Herman. A lifelong learner with a passion for culture and communication, she graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she cultivated her deep love for language and education.

On December 30, 1961, Joan wed her beloved husband, James Edward Sickles, at the Calvary Methodist Church in Detroit. Together, they built a life centered on intellectual curiosity and devotion to family.

Joan will be remembered for her sharp intellect, and the grace and warmth she brought to her household. She was a loving wife, a dedicated educator, and a cherished friend to many.

She is survived by her husband, James; her children, Thomas (Christine) Sickles; her grandchildren, Justin (Jennifer) Sickles, Lawrence Sickles, Stephanie (Cory) Cook, and Allen Sickles; her great grandchildren, Jason, Jared and Juliet Sickles, RaeLynn and William Cook; and her brother John (Barbara) Herman and sister Judith (Dennis) Opacki. She was preceded in death by her parents and son Robert.
