Obituary
Age 82, of Portage, passed away at Rose Arbor on April 27, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Kalamazoo on July 23, 1943, the son of the late Versile “Buck” and Dorothy (Martin) Russell. On September 27, 1971 he married the love of his life Beth (Mudge) Russell, to whom he was married for 43 wonderful years. Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He worked hard at EM Sergeant until retiring. When not working his passion turned to sports. He loved football, a joy that started when he was the Quarterback at Portage Central High School. Most weekends were spent cheering for U of M, the Detroit Lions or the Detroit Redwings. He was an avid golfer and bowler who participated in many leagues. He was a member of a great softball team for many years. He loved music and entertaining others at his pool. Ken was always ready to party and stir up a little trouble with his friends. He also understood the value of peace and quiet. He enjoyed traveling to Gatlinburg, TN with his wife Beth to stay at their timeshare. Above all, Ken loved his family. He was an involved father and grandfather who leaves behind the legacy of a life well lived. His smile, laughter, strong will and twinkly blue eyes will be missed by all who loved him. Ken was preceded in passing by his wife Beth Russell; his sister, Shirley Pio; daughter, Carla Irene McNamee-Fluty and granddaughter, Nicole Winkelman. Surviving is his daughter, Kelly (Jay) Flynn; grandchildren, Kurtis Menken, Jessica Menken, and Brad Fluty; great-granddaughter Gabrielle; nephews Scott (Wendy) Pio and Billy (Estrella) Pio Jr; niece Dawn Pio; his best friend, Marvin “Duane” Smith; as well as other nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
I had the pleasure of working with Ken for 6 years at E. M. Sergeant in the service department. Between him and Duane, there was never a dull moment!! May He Rest In Peace.
Daddy Ken, I am so blessed to have known you. You and Beth welcomed me right in from the moment I showed up with Kelly. You wrapped my family up in comforting arms, and we always felt your warm and comforting love. Thanks for all the laughter, the fun, and even the times we just sat talking about whatever…. You will be missed, I love you…see ya on the otherside….Love, Kellie
