Obituary

Margaret (Peg) Carol Hoogendoorn was born on September 6, 1941, to Jacob and Nellie Nieuwenhuis. She passed away with her family by her side on October 10, 2026, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. We rejoice that she is no longer in pain and that she is in the presence of her Heavenly Father.

Peg was one of six children. She attended Richland Agricultural School (now Gull Lake) and enjoyed her classmates as well as playing clarinet in the school band. She continued to play the clarinet well into her 60s. She was so proud to have helped teach clarinet to her niece Ranelle as well as her grand-daughter Ashley. She was also the Drum Majorette in the high school marching band.

Peg married Robert Hoogendoorn on November 25, 1960. They spent 65 years together as husband and wife. Their marriage took them to California with the Marine Corps and back to Kalamazoo to join the family flower business, then owning Hoogie’s House of Flowers. Peg and Bob helped found the Sunrise Kiwanis Club in Comstock. They were able to sell their business, and they relocated full-time to Beaver Island, MI, in 2002. They very much enjoyed the beauty and serenity of their time there and made lifetime friends wherever they lived. In 2015, they moved back to the Kalamazoo area to be closer to their family.

Peg and Bob were blessed with a daughter, LaNae Lynn, who was born with leukemia and passed away in her infancy. They were then blessed with their daughter, Lora LaNae. They lost a son in the 8th month of pregnancy several years later and adopted their son Tad David shortly thereafter. Lora and Tad had a wonderful childhood with their Mom, who was very supportive and encouraged them in all of their activities, whether it be working at the Little League fields, helping at 4-H events, being a Class Mom at school, swimming with them in the family pool, or especially enjoying the best sledding hill in Alamo, MI. She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother.

Peg had strong faith in her Lord and Savior and was a member of Third Reformed Church (now Centerpoint), The Beaver Island Community Church, and Lighthouse Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir, playing her clarinet in the church orchestra, and teaching both adult and children’s Sunday School.

Peg is survived by her husband, Robert, her daughter Lora (Bob) Pasheilich, and her son Tad; grand-daughters Ashley (Andy) Drenth and Kaitlyn (Jordan) Rempel; and seven great- grandchildren: Brayden, Masyn, McKenzie, Lily, and CJ Rempel, and Adrian and Aubrey Drenth. She is also survived by her sisters: Dena Corstange, Karen (Fred) Reams, and Norma (Al)Collison; her sister-in-law Faith (Pat) Comerford, brother-in-law Jack (Jan) Hoogendoorn, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Nellie Nieuwenhuis, her daughter LaNae Lynn Hoogendoorn, Baby Boy Hoogendoorn, and her brothers and their wives William (Eleanor) and Jack (Helga) Nieuwenhuis, as well as brother-in-law Don Corstange.

I remember going to your house with my parents to make the candy bubalars with your parnet. So sorry for your lost.

I’ve known Peg for several years. She was always so sweet and supportive.
