Obituary
Age 77, passed away on Thursday, December 15, at his home in Galesburg, Michigan. Norm was born in Kalamazoo, MI, on January 23, 1945, the son of the late Martin and Evelyn Zomer. A 1963 graduate of Loy Norrix High School, Norm spent his entire life in the Kalamazoo area, where he was an industrial art and building trades teacher with Kalamazoo Public Schools for over 30 years. Norm loved spending time with family, hunting, fishing, camping, reading, and especially studying and teaching God’s word. He had a special talent for building and woodworking, blessing family and friends with his custom-made handiwork. Throughout his life, Norm’s love of Jesus Christ was manifest in his service to the church and his generous nature until being called home by his Lord. 2 Timothy 4:6-8. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy (Smith) Zomer, and his granddaughter, Madelaine Martin. He is survived by his sister Carol (Phil) Schmidt; his children, Tamera (Douglas) Martin, Daniel (Susan) Zomer, Kimberly (Thomas) Butler, Michael (Whitney) Zomer; and grandchildren, Nathan Martin, Nick and Josh Zomer; Cameron, Joel, and Alaina Butler; and Levi and Daniel Zomer; special friend, Margaret Jahn.
May the Lord wrap His arms around your family and give you His peace at this time. I remember Norm’s enthusiasm and joy at serving the Lord be it at church or alongside any who needed a hand.
Praying for the family during this challenging time. Sorrow for the family, but not like those who have no hope. REJOICING for Norm as all of heaven rejoices at his safe arrival home. Ron & Terry Hutchison
We lived in Kalamazoo from 1975 to 1979. During that time we attended Calvary Bible Church. Norm was my Sunday school teacher. He set an example for me to be a knowledgeable and caring teacher. My wife had a complication in her pregnancy with our second son. Norm and Nancy took care of my older son for one month, and we were very grateful. We had kept in touch with them for 40 years. Our time in Calvary Bible Church was instrumental in leading me into full-time Christian ministry. My wife and I are looking forward to seeing Norm and Nancy again in heaven where our Lord Jesus Christ is.
Norm and I have been friends for over 50 years. We have worked together on many work projects at church and Camp Michawana. Norm is a cherished brother in Christ and I will miss him greatly.
To Norm’s family, we extend our deepest sympathies for your loss. Norm was a great student of the Bible and an energetic worker for the Kingdom and His church. He had a deep love for Christian camping ministries, and I recall him especially enjoying being outdoors at Camp Barakel frequenting either the archery or rifle range and always being willing to “coach” a newcomer. I recall his good sense of humor and easy laugh when something truly struck him funny.
