Obituary
Age 93. Pete passed into the arms of Jesus on Sunday morning, April 15, 2018. He was born on September 10, 1924 in Broek Op Langedijk, The Netherlands, to Jan Paulus and Aaltje DenHartigh. He fought the Nazi Occupation as part of the Resistance Movement during World War II. He survived both the Occupation and as Prisoner of War in a Nazi Concentration Camp, where he relied on his faith and God given strength to survive. He came to America in 1947. He began his career as a herdsman in Maryland and also met and married the love of his life, Jacoba \"Coos\" and later moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Peter had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a very dedicated father, husband and Opa, who had a strong religious and spiritual center. He was extremely fond of music, specifically the Dutch Men’s choirs. He enjoyed marching band music and also played in a band when he lived in the Netherlands. Pete and his wife “Coos” made sure that their family enjoyed a summer vacation every year; going to a “cottage” and traveling to Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Comstock Christian Reformed Church for 63 years, where he served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. Sharing his love for Jesus was his joy and passion and talked freely with anyone and truly enjoyed helping others. Peter owned and operated DenHartigh’s Greenhouses for over 30 years and prior to that was a salesman and driver for Oven-Fresh Bakery. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Jacoba “Coby” DenHartigh, his 3 sisters and two brothers. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, John Paul (Ann) DenHartigh; William Richard DenHartigh, Linda (Jan) Vermeulen; Donald Peter (Penny) DenHartigh his brother, Willem DenHartigh, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
So sorry to hear about your dad! I know he will be missed! May God give you comfort and peace in the days ahead.

When we built a new grocery store in Climax in 1979 Pete was our breadman. To get us started right the first week we opened, Pete spent a few hours each day helping us with anything that needed doing. Not just the bakery products. Pete cared about us and we always considered him a very special person.

Our hearts are broken, yet we rejoice knowing Pete is with the Saviour he knew & served. We are so thankful the Lord allowed our life-paths to intertwine by George working at the greenhouse & our living at the home on the property. So many of his stories we will never forget, like how the Lord spared his life from the Nazis! It will be a privilege & honor to send a gift to the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission in Pete’s name.
