Randy loved to garden and walk in nature. He was an exceptional psychiatric nurse for over twelve years who truly valued the well-being of his patients and co-workers, being given the Daisy award for outstanding performance at Borgess Hospital. He had an appreciation for beauty in art and nature. He loved watching college football and playing poker with his friends. Randy was an avid reader with a wide collection of books which also fueled his passion for writing. Randy is survived by his daughter, Jordan Vanas-Peterson of Kalamazoo; his siblings, John Peterson of Muskegon, Shannon Schulz Webb of Brentwood, TN; nieces, Savanna and Sierra; and nephew, Nathan; and countless friends, including his former wife, Vicki Vanas. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Shelley.
Randy was one of my best college friends. We had good talks, played hoops, played pranks, and had a lot of good laughs.
I had the pleasure of working with Randy at Borgess. He was an outstanding nurse beloved by his coworkers. I will remember his infectious laugh and great sense of humor! My condolences to his family from the psychiatry department at WMed. Michael Redinger, MD Interim Chair, Department of Psychiatry Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine
