Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the service at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Barbara will be laid to rest at Mt. Ever Rest Memorial Park, South. Memorial contributions may be made to SWELL at Trinity ELC, in c/o the funeral home.

Age 85, passed away Tuesday morning, April 9, 2024. Barbara was born in Chattanooga, TN, on July 28, 1938, the daughter of William Edward and Lucille Frances (Woody) Friel. She was married to Elmer Hogg who preceded her in death in 1981. Barbara worked as a social worker at Verdries Nursing Home. She also worked for 18 years for Lutheran Social Services, now Samaritas, where she started a program called SWELL which supported foster children. She was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and relied on her faith. Nothing was more important to her than her family. She had a special bond with her two grandsons. Barbara is survived by her children, Mary Beth (Dale) Wood of Galesburg, Michael Hogg of Paw Paw, and Melissa Dumont of Parchment; grandchildren, Lauren (Eric) Reynolds, Jacob (Nicole) Dumont, Natalie (Dwayne Love) Hogg, William Dumont; former son-in-law, Erik Dumont; great-grandchildren, Samuel Reynolds, Holden Reynolds, Weston Reynolds, Olive Dumont; sister-in-law, Kathleen Friel; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends including special friends Kay Decker and Sandy DeBruyn. Besides her husband, Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, George Friel; nephew, William ”Billy” Friel.
