Cameron Craig Carter of Kalamazoo, age 72, passed away of a sudden cardiac event on March 15, 2020.
Cam was born November 27, 1947, the son of the late Dr. Elwyn F. and Sara F. (Howerton) Carter. He was a resident of the Kalamazoo area for most of his life, graduating from University High School. He then attended Western Michigan University where he was enrolled at the Lee Honors College. Cam graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science Degree and joined the Delta Upsilon Fraternal Brotherhood. He then finished his formal education at Arizona State University with a master’s degree in Construction Management.
Cam worked in the construction trades for over fifty years and played a part in many of the “green” renovation houses in Kalamazoo’s Historical District. He served as President of the Kalamazoo Home Builder’s Association in the 1980’s. Cam also worked with Habitat for Humanity later in his career, and he spent many years teaching woodworking and vocational education.
Cam enjoyed working with his hands in both hobby and profession. He was an avid collector of model trains, including building, painting, and wiring original track designs. He spent most of his life crafting original creations of furniture, artwork, and outdoor playsets for his children and grandchildren. Cam also had a strong love of music which he inherited from his parents and passed on to future generations.
In his younger years, he went camping and traveling throughout the Southwestern United States. He vacationed nearly every summer in Petoskey, where he went canoeing, kayaking, cross country skiing, and boating. He also did annual camping and rafting trips with his friends.
Cam was known for his kindness, intelligence, and great sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by the many people he touched throughout his lifespan.
Ultimately, Cam believed his greatest accomplishments in life were his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Christine (Geoff) Lindberg of Kalamazoo, MI, Jason (Andrea) Carter of Rochester, MI, Stephen (Donna Eng) Carter of Grand Rapids, MI, and their mother Sharon Svendsen; his grandchildren, Owen, Madalyn and Evan Lindberg, Caleb and Cameron Carter, and Eloise and Sharon Lucille Carter; his siblings E. Scott Carter and Mary Carter; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Cam was preceded in death by his brother David Carter.
