Cheri passed peacefully into the arms of her Creator on January 25, 2023 at Rose Arbor surrounded by the love of her family. Cheri was born on December 21, 1946, to Charles and Virginia (Fitch) Rudge, the first of five children. She grew up in the Portage/Kalamazoo area and graduated from Loy Norrix High School in 1965. She married Charles Moerdyk on July 29, 1967. During their marriage they welcomed two daughters into the world. Although they divorced in 1984, they remained friends and committed parents so that their children never had to feel they had to choose between them. Cheri began her working career as a long-distance phone operator for Michigan Bell. After years of stay at home parenting, she returned to the workforce at Provincial House of Portage. After earning her associates degree from Davenport College, Cheri ultimately retired from Westside Family Medical Center after 25 years as a medical receptionist. She maintained lifelong friendships with people from everywhere she worked. Cheri was a long-time member of the Portage Women’s Club where she met more wonderful ladies who became her regular Friday lunch bunch in her retirement years. They also enjoyed years of ladies’ weekends in South Haven together. Cheri always enjoyed doing various crafting including creating wonderful scrapbooks of all her children, grandchildren, her travels, and her family ancestry. On Christmas Day 2022, Cheri was filled with great joy as she held her first great grandchild. Cheri was not one to command a room and be the center of attention. But she was a constant and loving presence always there to love and support her family and friends. She loved to laugh. She loved music. She enjoyed hosting gatherings. And most of all, she loved her family. Cheri was preceded in death by her parents, Charles & Virginia (Fitch) Rudge, her brother, Christopher Rudge, and brother-in-law, Robert Herbeck. She is survived by her siblings Carin Herbeck, Craig (Daria) Rudge, and Curt Rudge, ex-husband, Charles Moerdyk, daughters Paulette (Pete) Moerdyk-Catlin, Carie Moerdyk, grandchildren Danielle Stutzman, Miranda (Nick) Presley, Maggie Gross, Charlie Gross, Aaron Catlin, great granddaughter Josephine Presley, nephew Kevin Rudge, niece Madison Rudge, former son’s-in-law, Dan Stuztman and Dan Gross. several cousins, and many extended family members.
