Newton, Craig
Galesburg

Age 77, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2023. Craig was born in Cuba, New York, on January 11, 1946, the son of Jack and Elizabeth “Betty” (Totten) Newton. On June 17, 1967, he married Gay Kalmbach who survives him. Craig proudly served his nation as a member of the United States Coast Guard, where he served as a cook and gunner. He later served at the Veterans Administration in Battle Creek as a cook for 33 years. He instilled in his sons a pride in his military service. Craig was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fly-fishing. He also enjoyed teaching fly-fishing. As a sportsman, he was a fan of the Detroit Tigers and any Michigan State University team. Around the house, he loved gardening, woodworking and tinkering with anything, especially his tractors. He loved sharing his knowledge of things with others. Craig was always the first to be willing to help someone. He was active in the City of Galesburg and had served as a councilman. More than anything, Craig was proud of the roots he had laid down and extremely proud of his family. Besides his wife, Craig is survived by his sons, Benjamin Newton of Galesburg and Samuel (Stephanie) Newton of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Kelsea, Jeremy, Shelbey, Logan, Jacob, Evan, Luke, Jackson, Elizabeth, Natalie and Nolan; great-grandchildren, Scott and Keegan; brother, David (Mary) Newton; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends. Craig was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rebecca; and sister, Sandra.
