A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Bible Church, 855 S. Drake Rd., Kalamazoo. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the service at the church, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Dan will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, OH. Those wishing to make a lasting gift in Dan’s name are asked to remember Calvary Bible Church Youth Bible Fund, in c/o the funeral home.

Daniel Wright age 84 of Portage passed away Friday afternoon, April 10, 2026, just two days before his 85th birthday. Dan was born in Nelsonville, OH on April 12, 1941, the son of William and Phyllis (McDonald) Wright. In 1963, he married Janet Kay Howson who survives him. Dan graduated from Buchtel High School, Ohio University in Athens and received his master’s degree at Michigan State University. He played baseball at Ohio as a star pitcher. Dan had a long career as an educator, having taught in Benton Harbor and Niles. Earlier in his career he taught in Ohio. He was a baseball coach for Benton Harbor, Niles and Berrien Springs. When he was at Berrien Springs, the team won the state championship in 1984, with both of his sons on the team. He was inducted into the MHSBCA Hall of Fame in 2000. Besides his interest in baseball, he also loved to hunt and fish. More than anything he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Besides his wife, Dan is survived by his son, Greg (Tammy) Wright; grandchildren, Mackenzie, Cara, Alison; sisters, Wanda Cagg, Mary Ellen (Pat) Walsh; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Dan was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Troy Daniel Wright; a grandson, Andrew Steven Wright; two brothers; five sisters.
