Dorothy was born August 6, 1921, in Douglas County, IL, to Sallie (Sherrard) McNeill and Thomas Allen Bell. She married Carl Edward Henby on February 2, 1941, in a small country church named Cartwright in Garrett Township, IL, where she had attended Sunday School as a child. Born to this marriage was a son, John Edward. Carl and Dorothy were divorced in 1962, and she later married Robert W. Hay, Sr. who died in 2010. Survivors include her son, John Edward Henby of Galesburg, MI; grandchildren, Lisa Henby of Waconia, MN, and Scott (Nora) Henby of Washington, DC; their mother, Lee (Meyer) Henby of Portage, MI; great-grandchildren, John Michael Henby and Samuel Christopher Henby. Also surviving are stepchildren, Timothy (Brenda) Hay of North Carolina, Nancy Hay of LaSalle, IL, Janet (Michael) Corr of Chicago, IL; step-grandchildren, Shannon Martin, Brittany Hay, Jennifer Hay, Kyle Halterman, Joseph Hay, Crystal Corr, Angelina Corr; and several step-great-grandchildren; She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Norma Tullis Puckett, Carson Tullis, Linda Tullis Mix, Ted (Joyce) Shields, Fred Shields, Larry Bell, Patricia Cox Thompson, Robert Cox; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews who were very dear to her. She was predeceased by her parents; both of her husbands; sisters, Elizabeth Tullis, Catharine Shields Purcell, Virginia Webster, Mildred Cox; brother, Allan Bell; stepson, Robert W. Hay, Jr.; niece, Barbara Bell Plummer; and nephews, Benjamin Shields, William Tullis and Thomas Cox.
