Gerald John Gernaat passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, Nov. 30th 2023 at the age of 91. Gerald was born on June 27^th, 1932 in Kalamazoo, MI, the eldest son of Garrett and Sue (Vanderwoude) Gernaat. Gerald grew up working in the celery fields with his family. He worked for the Dunkley Corporation out of High School traveling to many states.  Gerald then pursued being a carpenter and was a self-employed Custom Home Builder in the greater Kalamazoo area for over 40 years. Gerald was a lifelong member of Third Reformed Church (CenterPoint) and attended Haven Church his last few years with his family. On June 14^th, 1963 Gerald married Judith DePriester who preceded him in passing on February 4^th, 2015. They enjoyed 51 years together and spent many years golfing in their couple’s golf league along with many golf trips up North and trips south in the Winter. Gerald enjoyed his tractors, golfing and spending time hunting at the cabin in Watersmeet, MI. Gerald was always present at his grandchildren’s school or sporting events. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by all. Gerald is survived by two sons, Bruce and Tim (Vicky) Gernaat; five grandchildren, Jacob, Benjamin, Alyssa, Kylie and Kennedy Gernaat; special friend, Jackie Wolthuis; sisters-in-law, Diane and Sandy Gernaat; nieces, nephews and extended family. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy; brothers, Donald and William Gernaat.
