A committal service with full military honors will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 9:30 AM (those planning to attend should meet in the funeral assembly area at the entrance of the cemetery by 9:15 AM), followed by a memorial service at Greenwood Reformed Church, 1815 Winton Ave., Kalamazoo, MI 49001, beginning at 11:00 AM with Pastor David Armstrong officiating In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Gilbert’s memory may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Age 84, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Gilbert was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on July 18, 1937, the son of the late Fred and Esther (Bird) Slayton. He was a graduate of Battle Creek Central High School, class of 1955. Shortly after graduation, Gilbert joined the United States Navy and served his country honorably until 1957. He was employed as a Chemical Operator at the Upjohn Company for more than 30 years. Gilbert was an avid deer hunter his whole life and enjoyed riding his bicycle, even riding the Kal-Haven trail all the way to South Haven on his 84th birthday. He was a longtime member of Bethel Reformed Church where he served as deacon and church treasurer. Most recently, Gilbert was a member of Greenwood Reformed Church. On September 11, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, the former Gloria A. Hendrick, who survives. Gilbert is also survived by three children, Cindy Deaner, Lisa Melville and Troy (Jennifer) Slayton; three grandchildren, Justin, Jordan and Ainsley; great-grandson, Everett; sister, Catherine (Gary) Sonneville and nieces, Shannon and Crystal. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son in-law, Doug Deaner. A committal service with full military honors will take place at Ft.
