A memorial service in witness to her life and faith will be held on Monday, November 21, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Kalamazoo Missionary Church, 5045 E Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo. Friends may call on the family on Sunday evening, November 20, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Joldersma & Klein Funeral Home, 917 S. Burdick St, Kalamazoo. Helen will be laid to rest alongside Owen at Maple Grove Cemetery, Comstock. Memorial contributions may be made to Promedica Hospice or Kauhale Assisted Living Home of Otsego, c/o the funeral home.

Age 86, passed away Thursday morning, November 17, 2022. Helen was born in Richard City, TN, on January 2, 1936, the daughter of James Dotson and Dorothy Estele (Shell) Walker. On April 11, 1970, she married Owen Ray Byers who preceded her in death in 1987. Helen enjoyed going to the casino and playing bingo. She loved to cook and was famous for her fried chicken and fish, biscuits and gravy. More than anything she loved her family and spending time with them. She was a competitive person and liked playing board and card games with her children and grandchildren. Helen is survived by her children, Norma (Chuck) Rogers, Donald (Roberta) Harrell, Janice Beauchamp, Terry (Donna) Byers, Martha Serio, Ron Harrell, Louis Byers, Maria (Scott) Bielski; daughters-in-law, Barb Smith and Becky Hallberg; 28 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brother, James (Elaine) Walker; several nieces and nephews and countless friends, including her lifelong friend, Wilma Lock. Besides her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Jerry Byers, Robert Smith; a son-in-law, Wayne Beauchamp; brothers, Donald (Frances) Walker, Joe Ray Walker, William Walker; and sisters, Billie Sue Brock and Jimmileen Corkhill.
