In accordance with his wishes cremation will take place and a memorial service to honor his life will be held at Kanley Chapel at Western Michigan University on March 30, 2019 beginning at 10 am. Memorial contributions may be made to American Parkinson Disease Association c/o the funeral home. Services in Rochester NY are still being finalized and will run in a notice in the local paper soon.

Age, 74, passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, with his wife Susan, at his side. Herbert was born on October 24, 1944, in Rochester NY, the son of the late Herbert H and Ruth Swingle, Sr. Herbert was a retired teacher of 35 years for the Greece Central School District in Greece, NY. He was dedicated to his students, serving as a coach and mentor for many. His passion for teaching extended well beyond the classroom and he was always the motivator, full of life in everything he did. In retirement he used his time to continue to volunteer and support others in the community. He dedicated his time on several local boards in New York including the Board of Counselors at the Office of Aging and The Committee of the Canandaigua Historical Museum. Herb received an Outstanding Volunteer Contribution Award from the New York State Office for Aging. He was active with Meals on Wheels, Office of the Aging and the local hospital. He was an avid Civil War Buff and taught about the Civil War at the Senior Citizen Center in New York. He continued to work with students when he relocated to Michigan and volunteered much of his time at Western Michigan University where he loved working with international students at CELCIS. Herb was a Vietnam Veteran serving his country from 1967-68 as a helicopter pilot. On October 28, 2013 he married Susan, who survives. He is also survived by his son, Matthew and daughter, Sarah (Frank) and his granddaughter Adalyn. Herbert was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen G. Swingle.
