Jack Eugene Scheffers passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2025. Jack was the dearly loved father of Leah and her husband Matthew Smith, and Nathan and his wife Lindsay Scheffers. He was cherished by his grandchildren, Scarlett and Eleanor Smith, and Dylan Scheffers.
Jack loved spending time with his children and helping others. He was an athlete, playing basketball, football, and running track at Kalamazoo Christian High School, and he passed along his love and knowledge of sports to both of his children, coaching Little League and middle school girls (including his daughter and nieces) basketball for many years. He attended every one of Leah and Nate’s basketball games, cross country and track competitions, soccer and tennis games. He taught his kids the perfect layup and jump shot. He even began teaching his oldest grandchild golf at the age of five. His family also enjoyed years of camping and traveling, whether to Disney World or camping in the Rockies, Kentucky, and many spots in Michigan, or houseboating in Kentucky, and traveling with friends to Aruba. Jack also loved fishing trips with family and friends over the years – to destinations including North Manitou Island, Canada, and a friend’s cabin in Brethren.
Jack also had a heart for those needing help, often volunteering his time and knowledge to help others with big or little home projects – or simply to help the driver along the road whose car had run out of gas. He was a member of Milwood Christian Reformed Church, where his children were 4th generation members. He very much enjoyed leading Nate’s youth group, especially teaching with anything that used wood and tools, and leading camping trips full of adventure. More recently he was a member of Southern Heights Christian Reformed Church.
Jack and his twin sister Jill were born in Landstuhl, Germany, while his father served in the U.S. Army; they returned to their hometown of Kalamazoo when Jack and Jill were still infants. Jack spent his life in Kalamazoo and he was a carpenter and builder by trade, as co-owner of Scheffers Construction and Scheffers Management. He loved his work and was an excellent trim carpenter. He started most days early with a cup or two of coffee and the newspaper, before heading off to solve carpentry problems and help his clients.
Jack leaves behind his loving mother and step-father, June and Jake Scheffers, and his siblings, with whom he was very close—his twin sister Jill and husband Bob Mulder, and brother Thomas (Tom) and wife Terri Scheffers, former wife Kitty (Rob) Skarjune, many loved nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his father, Arthur E. Scheffers, Jr.
Jack will be missed by so many, but he leaves us with memories that will be cherished and a sure knowledge that he is now healthy and whole, reunited with his Father until the day we will all rejoice together.
