In accordance with his wish, cremation will take place and he will be laid to rest privately at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Borgess Heart Institute, c/o the funeral home.

Age 76, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Kalamazoo on September 7, 1943, the son of the late Glenn and Katherine (Sparks) Flegel. James remained a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo and was always proud of his home and community. He was a hard worker who was employed for more than thirty years by KTS. When not working he loved spending time outdoors in nature. He enjoyed camping and fishing. He was an avid NASCAR fan and motorcycle enthusiast; a passion he passed on to his family. He was a lifetime member of the Eagles Lodge 68. James was a loving grandfather and great-grandfather and was always proud to spend time with his family. He leaves behind many wonderful memories that will be cherished for years to come. He is survived by his two sons, James (Laura) Flegel and Joseph (Vicki) Flegel; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; a brother Kenny Flegel; his significant other of thirty-nine years, Jean Newsome; former spouse Sandra Haines; nieces, nephews and friends. He was also preceded in passing by a brother, Butch Flegel.
